On October 5–6, an orientation seminar took place in Monchegorsk for the finalists of the Open Nationwide Competition for Development of a Microdistrict Concept for Monchegorsk, Murmansk region.
Day 1
The first day included an orientation meeting with Evgeny Borzenko, Vice President and Head of the Kola Division of Norilsk Nickel and CEO of Kola MMC. During the meeting, finalists were told about the objectives of the competition and the social initiatives of Norilsk Nickel.
Participants shared their plans and expectations, and the finalists learned about the development peculiarities of the town of Monchegorsk, which the finalists must take into account when designing their projects. Special emphasis was placed on competition tasks related to other requirements.
There was a bus and pedestrian tour of the central part of the town, accompanied by experts in architecture and history, to review best landscaping practices in order to assess the quality of the urban environment. A visit to the competition territory was one of the most important parts of the program. Deputy Director of Municipal State Institution Monchegorsk Housing and Utilities Directorate Vitaly Zheleztsov told the finalists about features of the area, problems with integration into the urban environment, and answered questions from the participants.
Day 2
The second day of the orientation seminar, October 6, began with the finalists’ visit the observation point on Mount Poazuaivench, with views of the surrounding area.
There was an inspection of the spatial organization the town accompanied by representatives of the Monchegorsk Development Agency Autonomous Non-Profit Organization and the Monchegorsk administration, who talked the problems and challenges of town planning.
Participants discussed the architectural look and functional planning features of the territory, possible problems with property, issues of improvement and use, engineering and transport infrastructure, and the development of a transportation framework during a consultation meeting with representatives of the executive authorities responsible for architecture and town planning, property relations, housing and communal services, and engineering and transport infrastructure.
Each finalist team had an individual workshop with stakeholders, where they had the opportunity to ask questions regarding the future development of the concept.
