The discussion “Fragile world: restoration and reconstruction of historical spaces” was held

Moscow Interior and Design Week started on November 1. It is the most awaited event of the year in the industry. The business program opened with the discussion “Fragile world: restoration and reconstruction of historical spaces”. The moderator was Maria Sedletskaya, Head of the analytical group CENTRE Lab.

On the main stage of the Pavilion VDNKh No. 57, experts in restoration, engineering technology and architecture shared their experience with heritage monuments.

Today, many monuments function as offices, and popular public and cultural spaces. General Director of Center for Complex Development JSC Andrey Filippov and co-founder of Faber Group Boris Matveev showed by example of their cases in Ivanovo Region how this practice is transferred from the capital to the regions.

Tatyana Starchenko, manager of Wowhaus project group, drew the audience’s attention to the importance of not only restoring a particular historical site, but also activating the space around it. While working on the rebirth of the Arkhangelskoye Estate museum, the architectural firm filled the adjoining territory with new meanings.

Radical functional changes can indeed inject new life to historical sites. It is no coincidence that Muscovites fell in love with a food mall in the entourage of the Miusskoye streetcar depot and Hydroelectric Power Station No. 2, an innovative cultural space next to Red Square.

Oleg Golosnoy, the head of the Territorial Control Department of the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow, mentioned in his speech a special program in 2022 for restoration works of 25 apartment buildings which are the objects of cultural heritage. Currently, 20 of them are again a part of the active life of the capital.

Experts came to the consensus that objects of cultural heritage must be harmoniously integrated into the modern urban environment without losing their uniqueness or connection with a particular historical era. Under such conditions, the renewal of the “fragile world” is a complex, but very important challenge.

From November 1 to 6, the Moscow Week of Interior and Design is taking place at VDNKh. This is the most anticipated event in the field of improving urban and social spaces. There are a large-scale exhibition and business program with lectures and discussions on the present and future of Russian design in Pavilions 55 and 57.

It is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with Russian brands and learn about innovative solutions in the sphere of interior design from professionals. The main topics of the week will be:
