The “Regional Russia” magazine published an article on topical issues of public spaces development in the northern cities of Russia. The study of the CENTER lab International Urban Laboratory addresses the issue of creating a comfortable environment in the Far North where harsh climatic conditions and the geopolitical importance of the region pose special challenges for both residents and territorial development experts. The authors analyze different types of cities in terms of their population and geographical location to identify specific needs and scenarios for the development of public spaces.
The article describes in detail the methodology of urban clustering and the results of complex assessment which includes 16 factors impacting the formation of public spaces, from socio-cultural specific features to climate conditions. Eight groups of the cities have been identified, each having its unique characteristics, that evidences the internal heterogeneity of the northern regions. Approaches to the formation of spaces vary depending on the type of the cities which makes it possible to optimize development strategies with regard to the specific conditions.
The material also considers the research and practical aspects of introducing innovations in the creation of public spaces in the North. In particular, attention is paid not only to traditional open spaces but also to alternative enclaves that could be adapted to harsh conditions. New formats are being considered, such as light design in the polar night, murals and art objects, innovative youth spaces that contribute to the inclusion of the city in the federal registers of best practices for creating a comfortable environment.
