Oryol Polesie National Park is a place where visitors can enjoy fresh pine air, walk along forest trails, and encounter rare plants and animals—most notably the European bison. The area’s unique natural environment attracts guests from other regions: more than 100 kilometers of eco-trails have been laid across the park. There are also cultural landmarks connected with the life and work of Ivan Turgenev, who famously celebrated the Oryol region in his writings.

Experts from the International Urban Laboratory CENTER Lab will be working in this distinctive setting. The team will assess whether it is feasible to establish a special economic zone adjacent to the national park and thereby accelerate tourism development in the region.

CENTER Lab has extensive experience working with specially protected natural areas. Its analysts pay particular attention to maintaining a balance between visitor comfort and biodiversity conservation, respecting the site’s protected status while taking residents’ interests into account. For this reason, everyone who cares about the nature of the Oryol region is invited to share their views and take part in the study.
