Excursion Golden and sweet island

We have prepared a series of tours for the Moscow Industrial project as part of the International Urban Forum.

A Golden and Sweet Island is a curious route by Inna Krylova dedicated to the creation of the first tramway power plant, the history of the Red October plant and its workshops, and the antique aesthetic of this industrial district.

At first glance, it may seem that the GES-2 is the most modern building in Moscow, but in reality it is over a hundred years old.

The building was built at the beginning of the 20th century on Bolotnaya Embankment by architect Vasily Bashkirov and engineer Mikhail Polivanov. It survived the revolution, the war and stagnation, it supplied electricity to traumas, the Kremlin and the city center. It has been modernized and rebuilt many times.

In 2021, with the help of the VAC Foundation and the RPBW architectural office under the direction of Renzo Piano, the building gained new life and became the cultural space of the capital.

GES-2 is the first cultural institution in Russia to receive one of the most prestigious environmental certificates, LEED Gold. The former power plant is considered one of the most modern buildings in the world in terms of sustainable architecture.

Now the House of Culture houses a cinema, playgrounds, workshops, multifunctional galleries, a library, restaurants and cafes, as well as an outdoor recreation area “Grove”.

The Moscow Industrial project has been prepared by the Government of Moscow’s Complex for Economic Policy and Moscow Industrial Relations as part of the Moscow Industrial Quarters program for the comprehensive development of former industrial zones, in partnership with the CENTER Lab International Urban Laboratory.
