“Paradoxes of public art universe: place, time, action” section was held on April 20 under the frameworks of Vectors 2024 International Conference.
Maria Sedletskaya, head of the analytical department of the CENTER Lab International Urban Laboratory, was a participant to the discussion “Contemporary market of public art: customers and consumers, current practices and trends”.
Public art is universally integrated in the infrastructure of modern cities, however, the issue of quality criteria of such art objects and tasks to solve with their help is still open and under debate.
The panelists included:
– Daria Shamray, Deputy Director General on Partner Relations, the Agency for Creative Industries;
– Polina Yezh, co-founder of Street Art Research Institute and Nov’ bureau. Curator of “Stories of Golden Apples” program, Almetyevsk;
– Lada Rozhentsova, Head of Product Management, Samolet Group, architect;
– Artyom Kalashyan, urbanist, producer of social and cultural events (Vyksa Festival).
Alexander Astakhov, projects curator, producer of cultural events (“Art Fabrica”, “Here and now”, “Night in the Museum”).
The speakers highlighted the main trends in public art evolution, namely, involvement of residents in projects origination that elevates projects significance among local community; a transition to systemic decision, projects are getting more meaningful in the urban context; the number of national artists having their unique styles is rising.
In her speech Maria Sedletskaya noted that public art is getting an intrinsic part of experience economy producing bespoken and memorable sites to attract tourists and local residents. At the same time, public art reaches beyond traditional forms such as sculpture and painting finding new ways of interaction with utility objects.
Public art is still evolving and adapting which remaining an integral part of modern urban environment.
